Driving Society
The Enchantment Driving Society (EDS) was started in October of 1983 by a group of dedicated horse driving enthusiasts, primarily located in the Albuquerque area. This group had a desire to learn ever more about the art and sport of carriage driving. The club is celebrating its’ twenty-fifth year in 2008, with some of our current roster being original founding members. We hold pleasure drives,
beginning driving clinics, more advanced level clinics, pleasure shows,
fun shows, poker rallies, and we are instrumental in organizing the two
day pleasure driving show held at the New Mexico State Fair. In addition
to our monthly meetings, we hold a popular holiday party each December.
The club also keeps a point system for year end awards for it’s membership,
with categories such as Champion Horse, Novice Whip, Most Improved Whip,
etc.
EDS publishes a monthly
information and education newsletter and holds monthly meetings at the
Copper Canyon Café in Southeast Albuquerque. Our current members
are geographically located all throughout New Mexico, with some out of
state members in Arizona, Colorado, and Texas.
Enchantment Driving Society
takes great pride in the long history of success related to encouraging
safe and enjoyable driving. We continually reach out to people interested
in learning how to drive, and those who want to improve upon their skills.
We welcome new members into our organization.
EDS President Diane Stewart and Goldie
Friesian Demonstration Kendall and Sonya Schneringer will exhibit two Friesians, Jesssica and Warlock.
Marybeth and Jose Luis Perez Soto will demonstrate
dressage with a Pas de Deux. Normally in dressage only one horse
at a time performs in the arena. However, in a Pas de Deux, two horses
perform together, sometimes side by side, and sometimes as mirror images
on opposite sides or ends of the arena. This beautiful demonstration
will be done on two Freisian horses.
Albuquerque Police Department Horse Mounted Unit The Albuquerque Police Department Horse Mounted Unit has been a vital asset to the police department since its inception in 1977. The unit is not only an essential component of the community based policing concept, but also provides high visibility patrols at major events, as well as a public relations tool that is immeasurable. Throughout the years, the officers assigned to the Horse Mounted Unit have developed rapport with the citizens of this community and have, without question, earned the respect of the police department as legitimate, credible partners in the fight against crime.
The Horse Mounted Unit has established itself as a utility unit and is used for various assignments throughout the City of Albuquerque. Some of the duties the unit conducts are park and neighborhood patrols, search and rescue, dignitary protection, and tactical support at large scale disturbances. In addition, the horses are utilized for crowd control and proactive patrols in the City’s very popular and quickly growing downtown entertainment district. The teams of horse and officer are a force multiplier and studies have been shown that a singular officer and horse has the same effect as 5 to 10 ground officers. Currently, the Horse Mounted Unit consists of six full time officers and their partners, 8 Percheron Draft Geldings, a Percheron/Thoroughbred Cross, a Shire/Perceheron/Cross, and Belgian Draft. The Horse Mounted Unit also uses an American Miniature Horse named King Richard, after the fallen APD Officers Michael King and Richard Smith, for community functions. The Horse Mounted Unit is an icon of the City of Albuquerque and will continue assisting the Albuquerque Police Department in all future endeavors.
